Defense in the NBA is Overrated!!

With the NBA Draft coming up this year's crop of draftees are being scrutinized and put under the microscope. The one thing I keep hearing about some of the potential lottery picks is that they can't play defense. Let me clue you in on something. Defense is totally overrated in the NBA. Sure it helps to have a Ron Artest Bruce Bowen or Ben Wallace on your team but last time I looked none of those guys is still playing in this year's playoffs. If I hear one more person talk about Adam Morrison's defense being the reason he shouldn't be a lottery pick I am going to scream.

Can Pro Sports Teams Function in Portland Any More?

Just a few thoughts. I'm not so sure that pro sports can succeed in Portland Oregon any more. State and city government officials have made it abundantly clear that they are not willing to put a dime towards any of the financing - whether that's with the Portland Trail Blazers or a potential MLB team like the Florida Marlins. Mayor Tom Potter all but told Florida Marlins President David Samson to not waste his time making a trip to Portland because the city has other priorities to pay for other than pro sports.Cities such as Anaheim St.

Ogilvy Handed US Open Championship and Winner's Paycheck by Mickelson

Aussie golfer Geoff Ogilvy backed in to his first major yesterday. He took home $1.25 million in prize money for the win. The win catapulted the unheralded Ogilvy to #2 on the PGA Money list for the year with $3.9M in earnings. He trails only Phil Mickelson and is front of guys like Tiger and Vijay.....not bad.

Ratings Bonanza for ABC Sports/Not So Good for NBC Sports

Big weekend for ABC Sports. ABC’s Italy-U.S World Cup match earned a 5.2 overnight Nielsen rating the highest overnight rating for a World Cup game on the net since the ’98 Brazil-France championship match which earned a 7.0. The ’02 World Cup was held in South Korea and Japan “meaning most of the games were on in the middle of the night or in the early morning”.The NBA Finals Game 5 OT thriller between the Mavs and Heat didn't hurt the network's ratings either.

Early Exit at the US Open for Tiger

Tiger Woods did not make the cut for this weekend's final two rounds of the US Open marking the first time in his pro career that he has missed the cut at a major. As luck would have it we taped an interview with Nike Golf's Global Sports Marketing Director Kel Devlin earlier this week. Great insight from Kel about Tiger's new Nike Golf spot and the business behind golf at one of the majors. Interview sounds a bit dated though since we chat about Tiger having a chance to win the US Open.Tiger's early exit will hurt the TV ratings on NBC.

Terrific AP story today detailing how the Colorado Rockies use video iPods to help their players watch video and scout their opponents. Check out the AP Story. If you think about it most pro athletes have an iPod. Now team video coordinators and scouts have come up with the idea of downloading video for the player's next opponent. So if you are a MLB pitcher and you want to watch video of the lineup you'll be facing why not watch this video on your video iPod?

MJ Still Has Magical Marketing Power

The Sports QScores just came out this week. These scores rate the top sports personalities and their ability to move product as spokespeople for corporations. In other words if I am the CMO or advertising director for a company like Nike Coca-Cola or AT&T this list helps me determine which athletes have the most recognizable face/personality as well as a positive image. This study was conducted by the SPORTS BUSINESS JOURNAL. Three years after his retirement former Chicago Bulls great and NBA legend Michael Jordan is still ranked #1 with a Q rating of 50.

Dr. Henry Samueli and the Portland Trail Blazers

If you are a viewer/listener to Sports Business Radio you recall that it was several weeks ago when we told you that Anaheim Pond and Anaheim Mighty Ducks owner Dr. Robert Samueli was the leading candidate to purchase the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers and then move them to Anaheim. Now such outlets as The Oregonian and the LA Times are on board with bringing Samueli in to the picture as a potential NBA owner. Dr. Samueli is the founder of Broadcom and is a multi-billionaire.
